Saying no to your boss without burning the bridge
Your boss asks you to take on another project when you are already at capacity.
Strategy
Acknowledge the ask, decline cleanly, offer the next best thing.
I hear how important this is. I want to be straight with you: I cannot take this on this quarter. Between the audit and the migration, adding this would mean one of them slips, and I do not think that is the trade you want me to make. What I can do is review the plan and flag the risks. If you need the full thing, we should talk about what comes off the list.
If they push back
If they push: 'I want to say yes. That is why I am being honest about what yes would actually cost.'
What not to say
Do not make up reasons or agree to a deadline you cannot hit.
Follow-up
Email the list of current priorities and what would need to pause.
