Responding to unfair criticism in front of others

Your boss criticized you inaccurately in front of the team.

Strategy

Correct the record with one sentence in the room. Do the real conversation privately. Escalating publicly costs you more than the correction is worth.

In the room: "One clarification so the team has the right picture — the delay came from the vendor contract, and the timeline is in the tracker. Happy to walk through it after." Privately, later: "I want to talk about this morning. Being corrected on something inaccurate in front of the team makes it harder for me to lead that group. If I get something wrong, I would rather hear it from you first."

If they push back

If they say they did not mean it that way: "I believe you. The effect on the room was still real. All I am asking is that the first pass comes to me directly."

What not to say

  • That is completely wrong and you know it
  • You embarrassed me
  • Whatever you say
  • I will just keep my head down

Follow-up

Thanks for the conversation. No hard feelings on my end. Tracker link is here if you want the vendor timeline for context.
