Asking for a Raise
Employee
Direct

How to ask for a raise without sounding entitled

You have outgrown your pay band and want to open the compensation conversation with your manager without damaging the relationship.

Strategy

Lead with evidence, not need. Anchor on the market and the scope you already carry, then ask a clear question and stop talking. Silence does the work.

I want to talk about compensation, and I want to be direct about it. Over the last year I have taken on the vendor relationships and I am running the weekly forecast that used to sit with you. Comparable roles in our market are paying between X and Y. I would like my base moved to X. What would it take to get there this cycle?

If they push back

If they say budgets are frozen: "I understand the timing. Can we agree on the number now and a date it takes effect, so this is not a conversation we repeat in six months?"

What not to say

  • I really need this because my rent went up
  • Everyone else is making more than me
  • If I do not get this I will have to look elsewhere
  • Sorry to even bring this up

Follow-up

Thanks for hearing me out today. To recap: you are taking the move to X to your director, and we will confirm a decision by the 15th. I appreciate you taking it seriously.
