Declining a meeting without looking uncommitted

You are invited to a recurring meeting that is not a good use of your time.

Strategy

Decline the seat, not the outcome. Offer a lighter form of participation so the decline reads as focus rather than disengagement.

I am going to step out of the Thursday sync. Most of the agenda is downstream of decisions my team does not own, and I am protecting deep-work blocks this quarter. Send me the notes and tag me on anything that needs my call. I will turn those around same day.

If they push back

If they say your input is needed: "Then let us make it a standing ten minutes at the top and I will join for that piece."

What not to say

  • I am too busy for this
  • This meeting is a waste of time
  • I will try to make it
  • Do I really need to be there

Follow-up

Stepping out of the Thursday sync as discussed — tag me in the notes for anything needing a decision and I will respond the same day.
